A fair solution to the climate crisis:

Climate Income

Citizens' Climate is an association with 200,000 volunteers around the world.

In the EU we are working to get the European Parliament to put in place a simple, fair and effective climate policy. A Climate Income can solve most of the climate crisis by steadily reducing pollution and protecting citizens from the costs.

What is Climate Income?

Climate Income is paid for by putting a price on pollution known as a Carbon Tax. The price is applied to fossil fuels and increases every year.

The money this creates is used to pay citizens equally every month. Most people will be better off, and thereby be able to afford the lifestyle changes we all need to make.

Climate income works. Switzerland introduced theirs in 2008. So did British Columbia, Canada. In 2019, the rest of Canada followed suit.

Here's how it works:

Carbon Price

Polluters pay depending on how much they contribute to climate change, encouraging them to reduce how much fossil fuel they burn and to make cleaner decisions.

The money is then returned in equal shares to the population so that families do not suffer due to cost increases. Governments do not keep the money from the carbon tax.

Border Adjustment

To persuade other countries to do the same, international trade is balanced. This protects jobs and industry from loopholes or 'carbon leaks'.

A carbon tax offers the most cost-effective lever to reduce carbon emissions at the scale and speed that is necessary.

Our vision for a global solution

We have 10 years to start making drastic changes , and must reach net-zero by 2050 or earlier. Solutions must be clear for everyone—citizens, families, small businesses, industry, and the public sector—and easy for governments to implement.

Why EU adoption matters

The EU is one of the 3 largest economies in the world, along with the U.S. and China, so it has a big influence on international cooperation. Europe is taking the lead and the EU Green Deal shows even more ambition. This is what the EU was made for: all the EU countries working together and making things better for everyone.
